SpokesDog Boomer for Beads, Jewelry Tools and Jewelry Making Supplies by WigJig Web SiteWigJig News -- AKA Boomer Sez:

Our Spokesdog:  If an insurance company can have a gecko, we have decided that we can have a spokesdog.  Boomer, shown at right, is our spokesdog.  If you select Boomer's picture, you will be able to view Boomer at his work.

How to Unsubscribe:  If you signed up for our newsletter and then decided you don't want to receive it any more, the proper way to unsubscribe is to select the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of every newsletter e-mail or to follow our sign up link above.  On that sign up page we also provide a way for people to unsubscribe.

New Price for WigJig Delphi:    Starting the First of September, 2011, we have re-priced our WigJig Delphi to sell at a suggested retail price of $19.99.  We have never sold any of our clear WigJig tools for a lower price.  We believe that the Delphi, at the price of $19.99, is an excellent value.  If you have a WigJig Olympus or Olympus Lite and think that you would benefit from a jig that had smaller pegs and a pattern with five holes per inch instead of the four holes per inch in the Olympus family, please consider the purchase of our WigJig Delphi at this new, low price.  You can view our WigJig Delphi in our Internet store by selecting here.

Silver Filled Wire and Findings:  We have just ordered silver filled wire in 16, 18, 20 and 22 gauge in round, 20 gauge in square and 21 gauge in half-round.  This wire should be available for sale during the last week of September.

Sapphire Jewelry Making Gemstone AAA Grade

Birthstone for September:  The birthstone for September is the sapphire.  For more information on sapphires, please select here.  Sapphire is the gemstone quality version of the mineral corundum.  Chemically, sapphire is aluminum oxide and is almost identical to a ruby.  For this reason the sapphire and the ruby have very similar characteristics.  Sapphire can come in almost any color, with the colors being determined by the impurities in the stone.  The more red versions of a sapphire are a ruby.   With that said, blue is considered the normal color for a sapphire for use in jewelry.  The blue color results from titanium and iron inclusions in the crystal.  Many naturally occurring, mined sapphires are gray in color.  Frequently, these sapphires will have their blue color improved by heating the gemstone for several hours at a temperature of 1,800 degrees centigrade.

Some gemstone quality sapphires exhibit asterism.  Asterism is the optical property of displaying a star when illuminated by a single light source.  Star sapphires like the 182 carat Star of Bombay Sapphire demonstrate this optical property.

The hardness of a sapphire, like a ruby is 9.0 on the Mohs hardness scale.  While this hardness makes the sapphire the second hardest naturally occurring material, the sapphire is still about 1/4 as hard as a diamond.  Fortunately, a sapphire is 4 times harder than most glass and sand.

Because of this hardness and the fact that sapphires can be made in a laboratory relatively cheaply, there are several industrial applications for a sapphire.  In fact, man-made or lab created sapphires have become relatively commonplace.  Sapphire crystals can be grown in a lab up to many inches in size.  Clear sapphire is used as watch faces and as optical components.  Sapphire wafers are also used in the semiconductor industry as a base for semiconductor components.  Sapphires and rubies have both been used in making lasers.  Man-made sapphires are also available for use in making jewelry.

Abacus Jewelry Wire Earrings Jewelry Making Project with Sapphire BeadsAbacus Jewelry Wire Earrings Jewelry Making Project with Crystal AB BeadsFree Jewelry Design:
Our new jewelry making project for this newsletter is a new chandelier earring that we call the Abacus Jewelry Wire Earrings.  An abacus is a Chinese counting machine, and is essentially the first mechanical computer used for multiplication and addition.  Please see the two pictures at right.  The earring near right uses size six crystal silver-lined beads with 6mm round Swarovski crystal AB beads.  The earrings shown far-right use Swarovski 4mm bicone, sapphire, crystal beads and 8mm Precosia bicone crystal beads.

Please select either picture at right, or select here to view our new instructions for making the Abacus Jewelry Wire Earrings.

Past Techniques:
We maintain a techniques web page that provides links to the discussion of techniques in our prior newsletters.  You can visit this web page here.  Follow the links on that page to the discussion of the technique in that newsletter.

Jewelry Technique:
Kidney Ear Wire -- A Jewelry Making TechniqueKidney Ear Wire Finding -- A Jewelry Making TechniqueThis newsletter's jewelry making technique is instructions for making kidney ear wires.  We made a promise to a regular customer to publish instructions for making kidney ear wires and now we have kept our promise.

We provide free jewelry making instructions for making two styles of kidney ear wire finding.  Please see the pictures at right.  The picture at far-right is the more conventional kidney ear wire.  The picture near-right is a modified kidney ear wire that is easier to make.  Both designs have the advantage that they have a fastener in back that makes them more secure while being worn.  These are excellent ear wires to use when you have a valuable earring that you absolutely don't want to lose.

Please select here, or select either picture above-right to view our free instructions for making the kidney ear wire jewelry finding.

Nostalgia Corner:

Stays On Jewelry Wire Ear Wire Jewelry Making ProjectOur Nostalgia Corner project for this newsletter is our Stays On jewelry wire ear wire shown at right.  This ear wire is obviously a modification to the standard shepherd's hook style ear wire and is made to do a better job of remaining in place while light weight earrings are worn.  The notch at the top of these ear wires slips into place on an ear lobe and resists sliding off.

If you make your own earrings, we really recommend that you try making our Stays On Ear Wire Finding.  Earrings made with this ear wire really do stay on better than conventional ear wires.  If you are making earrings to sell, we suggest making these ear wires with a glass crystal bead to match the beads in your earrings.  This will differentiate your jewelry as both being technically better (stays on) and being better from a style perspective (matching beads in the ear wire).  It may make the difference between a sale and no sale for your earrings.  At a minimum, it will provide something for you to discuss with perspective customers.

Please select here or select the picture at right to view our instructions on how to make the Stays On Ear Wire Finding.

Warning! Joke Follows.
This is only a joke.  We tell jokes because we are in favor of smiling, laughing and being happy.  This does not mean that we are opposed to anyone or anything.

If you have ever in your entire life been offended by any joke  -- please skip the below paragraphs.  It is not our intention to offend anyone!  We don't write these jokes, we only re-tell jokes that we have heard on the public radio, television or over the Internet.

Boomer Humor:

A man is sitting in a bar talking to another patron a the bar.  The first man says "You know, I hear that Kansas City is the place to visit.  I hear that the people there are really friendly.  In fact, I hear that if you are in a bar, the locals will buy your drinks for you.  I hear that if you are from out of town, they will buy you dinner and even take you to their homes for evenings of hot passionate sex."  The second man says "Is that really true?"  The first man says, "That's what my wife tells me.  She visits there for her work all the time."

Boomer Philosophy:

If you have ever in your entire life been offended by any political philosophy  -- please skip the below paragraphs.  It is not our intention to offend anyone!  It is our intention to present current events from the perspective of a small business.

I have to admit that I have contributed to some of the Tea Party organizations.  My goal was to contribute to organizations that were in favor of reducing spending so that the United States does not follow the path of Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland or Portugal.  Or even the path of the city government for Central Falls Rhode Island.  The Government of Greece is very close to defaulting on its debt.  When it does, people who own Greek Government Bonds will lose their money.  When Greece fails, it currently appears that Italy, Spain and Portugal will follow like dominos.  The City of Central Falls, Rhode Island has already defaulted on their debt.  Retirees who worked all their lives for the city now have to accept 50% of the retirement that they were promised.  People who owned bonds issued by the City now have to accept pennies on the dollar that they are due.  You can read about the default by Central Falls by selecting here.  The point here is that governments can and do fail.  When they fail, the impact on all of the citizens of that location is very, very bad.  By contributing to some Tea Party organizations, I had hoped to avoid a default by the US government by slowing down government spending.

Unfortunately, the President is now telling us that the economic mess we are in is the fault of the Tea Party.  Since I contributed to the Tea Party, it must be my fault.

It must be my fault that the President signed into law a stimulus bill that did not stimulate.  He spent almost a trillion dollars and did not create any jobs.  The trillion dollars that was spent in the stimulus was entirely unfunded (not paid for), the US Government had to borrow that money, putting us closer to following Central Falls, Rhode Island, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal into insolvency.  Since I contributed to the Tea Party it must be my fault that the stimulus did not stimulate.  It could not be that the President's approach to stimulating the economy is entirely wrong.

It must be my fault that the President is running the US federal government in a manner that spends over four trillion dollars more than we take in in revenue in just two years.  All of that four trillion dollars had to be borrowed and that expenditure puts us much closer to following Central Falls, Rhode Island, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal into bankruptcy.  Since I contributed to the Tea Party, it must be my fault that we have a budget deficit of four trillion dollars over just two years that must be borrowed and that the deficit puts us into jeopardy of bankruptcy.  It could not be that the President is incompetent and can't manage a budget.  It could not be true that just because he has never had any experience running any organization that he is incompetent to run the largest organization in the world.

It must be my fault that the President's management of our US economy has resulted in an unemployment level of between 9 and 17% according to whose statistics you believe.  Since I contributed to the Tea Party, it must be my fault that unemployment is so high.  It must be my fault that businesses refuse to hire.  It could not be that  the fact that the President is the most anti-business President ever, could influence companies to delay hiring.  It could not be that because the President appoints openly anti-business, self avowed, Communists and socialists to key positions in his administration and that this would impact business decisions on when to hire employees.  It could not be that the radical environmentalists appointed to the EPA are creating regulations that will cost each and every citizen of this country in higher prices for gasoline and electricity.  It could not be that the Labor Union Lawyers appointed to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) are creating an environment to encourage Boeing to move jobs to China rather than to South Carolina.  It could not be that the permitorium on oil exploration permits has resulted in 100,000 jobs leaving the US Gulf Coast for places like Brazil to explore for oil there.  It just could not be that this President is not competent to manage the largest economy in the world just because he hasn't managed anything prior to this.  Again, it must be my fault because I contributed to the Tea Party.  It must be my fault that the President's approval rating based upon polling on the economy is only about 30%.  It could not be that the President is incompetent when it comes to managing the world's largest economy.

It must be my fault that the President has sent money to businesses owned by people who contribute to his re-election and those businesses went bankrupt.  Solyndra, a large manufacturer of solar panels, was able to make solar panels for $5 each.  The Chinese have discovered a technological breakthrough on manufacturing solar panels and can make them for $0.50 each.  It must be my fault that a company that is ten times more costly for the same product was not able to make a profit.  It could not be that the career employees in the US Government recognized that Solyndra could not make a profit , they told the administration that, and the Obama administration gave Solyndra over five hundred million dollars anyway.  It could not have had anything to do with the contributions that the owners of Solyndra made to the Obama re-election campaign.  It could not be that the officials in the Obama White House are so incompetent that they could not understand that people won't buy a product that is ten times more expensive with no value added.  Because I contributed to the Tea Party, it must be my fault that the White House directed spending money in such a foolish, corrupt and incompetent manner.

Since I contributed to the Tea Party, it must be my fault that the Democrats in Congress and the President enacted Obamacare, the new health care law.  It must be my fault that the United States formerly had the health care system that provided the highest survival rate for a patient with cancer and we have now changed that health care system to a system that allows cancer patients to die in a pain-free manner rather than try to cure the cancer.  We now have a health care system that encourages businesses to drop their corporate health care insurance for their employees.  We now have a health care system that is so confusing that businesses are reluctant to hire new employees because of concerns over paying their health care insurance costs.  I contributed to the Tea Party and it must be my fault that the country would do something as stupid as enacting Obamacare.

It must be my fault that President Obama took over the country when the economy was in a recession and his socialist policies made the recession worse.  It could not be that this administration's adamant devotion to a socialists spending agenda is responsible for the high unemployment and slow growth of the economy.  It must be my fault.  Or maybe, the President and his administration really are that incompetent.
